It seems appropriate that our investigations into transliteracy are taking place in the very diverse city of Leicester. This street sign near De Montfort University really appeals to me because it's a reminder that no matter what our cultural background or even our historical time, so many of us enjoy the same kinds of things – in this case, feeding birds. It's an experience common to many people, and that's why this simple notice had to be provided in several different scripts and languages. An example of transliteracy across translation?

I wonder why they didn’t consider a simple icon (a figure offering something to a bird within a ‘forbidden’ circle) as an alternative to all this text?
No idea! But it wouldn’t be so simple would it? What would be the sign, I wonder?
